Your custom orthotics will be made to maximize your comfort as you walk, run, and exercise. River City Orthotics offers a range of orthotic and footwear options that combine comfort with performance, to better meet your needs. Depending on your reason for needing orthotics, your custom-made pair will fit into one of three main categories: accommodative orthotics, rigid orthotics, or semirigid orthotics. After selecting the correct orthotics for you, your pedorthist will further personalize your orthotics based on your condition, daily activities, body mechanics, and footwear.

Accommodative Orthotics
Designed to absorb shock, improve balance, and take pressure off sore spots, accommodative orthotics work by redistributing your weight more evenly. This type of orthotic is commonly made from soft and compressible materials. Most regularly, accommodative orthotics are worn daily in either regular or prescription footwear. Accommodative orthotics are ideal for individuals with injured, symptomatic, or vulnerable feet. If your feet have a loss of fatty tissue due to age or a condition – including diabetes, a deformity, or arthritis of the feet – then accommodative orthotics could be right for you.

Rigid Orthotics
Designed to control motion, rigid orthotics are created from firm materials such as plastic or carbon fiber. Rigid orthotics control motion in two major foot joints, directly below the ankle joint. In most cases, rigid orthotics are worn in everyday footwear or dress shoes. Common reasons for needing rigid orthotics include having an abnormally functioning foot or having one leg that is longer than the other. Symptoms associated with requiring rigid orthotics include strains, aches, and pains associated with the legs, thighs, and lower back. In such cases requiring the correction of foot function, rigid orthotics may help to alleviate or even eliminate symptoms.

Semirigid Orthotics
Semirigid orthotics are made with soft materials and reinforced with firmer materials to aid in foot balance during walking or physical activities such as sports. Designed to control movement while providing cushioning, semirigid orthotics are a great choice for individuals who spend many hours walking on hard surfaces, such as may be required by certain jobs. Common jobs associated with requiring semirigid orthotics include teaching jobs, nursing jobs, and warehouse jobs. This type of foot orthotic also acts as an aid to athletes. When worn by athletes, semirigid orthotics have been shown to improve physical performance. Semirigid orthotics act dynamically as the athlete moves, by helping the muscles and tendons to work more efficiently. Athletes who wear semirigid orthotics have been able to jump higher and run faster.

Orthotics for Children
Foot orthotics can help children with foot deformities walk with greater stability and ease. Foot orthotics for children can be placed in a standard or athletic shoe. As the child’s feet develop, the type of foot orthotic they require may change. Depending on how soon the foot deformity is corrected, the length of time the child requires foot orthotics may vary. For growing children, it is recommended that the child’s orthotics are replaced every time they go up one or two shoe sizes.

Compression Stockings
Compression stockings are elastic garments designed to prevent pressure from building up in the veins of your legs. This type of stocking is commonly worn to prevent or slow the progression of venous disorders such as edema, phlebitis, and thrombosis. Wearing compression stockings can help prevent blood clots from forming in the lower legs and can also help in the treatment of ulcers. Some further benefits of wearing compression stockings include improved circulation and relief from heavy and aching legs. Compression stockings use strong elastics to improve your blood circulation in your legs and feet. Compression stockings gradually become looser from the ankle to the upper leg, causing improved blood flow away from the feet.
